Stephen Kenny will remain on as manager of the Republic of Ireland men's team until the end of this year's internationals before a review is conducted by the FAI into the European Championship qualifying campaign.
The men's team will not qualify for the finals in Germany via their group and there's only a slim chance of securing a play off.
FAI chief executive Jonathan Hill says that if a play off does occur, a decision will be made then whether or not Kenny will lead the team into that phase next year.

The news regarding Kenny was confirmed today by FAI chief executive Jonathan Hill, who also explained the decision not to offer Vera Pauw a new contract to remain as the manager of the women's team.
Hill acknowledged Pauw's contribution to football in Ireland and described her as a 'pioneer' in the women's game.
But he denied offering Pauw a new deal before the World Cup finals and rejected claims that Pauw's future was 'predetermined'.
Director of Football Marc Canham says the FAI and Pauw were not aligned in approach.
Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho will train away from the first team until his issues with manager Erik ten Hag are resolved.
Ten Hag dropped the England international for poor training performances earlier this month.
Sancho said he was "made a scapegoat" by the Dutchman.
United say Sancho is on a "personal training programme" as they await a resolution to a "squad discipline issue".
