Time to Retire the TV Licence? – January 22nd, 2024
Over €3,000 in fines for unpaid TV licences were handed down in a single day at Tralee District Court last week. This reflects a national downturn in the numbers failing to pay their TV licence in the wake of the RTÉ hidden payments controversy last summer. The Sunday Business Post reported that the Government was considering replacing the TV licence with a levy added to broadband bills to pay for public service broadcasting. Jerry spoke to Senator Malcolm Byrne who’s been calling for the Government to abolish the TV licence fee and instead directly fund public service broadcasting through the exchequer.

Focusing on the football were: • Selina Looney, chair of Kerry LGFA, Sinead O’Sullivan, PRO Inbhear Scéine Gaels, • Dan Kearney of Castleisland Desmonds, Mike ‘Trod’ Broderick, joint manager of the Kerry Minor Ladies Team who won the All-Ireland ‘B’ Championship last weekend. • Inbhear Scéine Gaels players Niamh Rochford, Roisín Carey and Leahanna Foley, and two young football fans and experts, Laoise and Teegan Smyth. • Dónal Barry, presenter of Radio Kerry’s Terrace Talk which airs each Monday from 6pm. Jerry also spoke to the general manager of the Sheen Falls Lodge, Scott Andrew. Other guests on the show were Labour Party representative Bernie Linnane who believes the Rose of Tralee International Festival is anachronistic. Tomás Sheehan who is general Munster branch secretary for the Independent Workers’ Union on the closure of Iceland stores in Tralee and Listowel. Jerry also spoke to Deputy Paul Murphy of People Before Profit – Solidarity who said the TV licence should be scrapped.
