Dan Quirke - September 4th 2024
This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Dan Quirke. Dan is the father of Dillon Quirke. Dillon was on the path following his father’s footsteps. Dan played football and hurling at juvenile and underage levels with Clonoulty–Rossmore. He won a total of six divisional minor and under-21 titles between 1982 and 1988 as well as an All-Ireland Colleges BHC title with Cashel CBS in 1982. Dan made a number of appearances with the Tipperary senior football team between 1991 and 1993. Dan’s son Dillon sadly lost his life on the 5th of August 2022. Dillon suddenly collapsed while playing the sport that he adored playing hurling for Clonoulty Rossmore in the Tipperary senior hurling championship in Semple Stadium due to Sudden Adult Death Syndrome. His father Dan and the Quirke family set up the Dillon Quirke Foundation with the aim of screening as many children as possible for heart defects. The charity organised a senior hurling challenge game at Semple Stadium between Tipperary and Limerick to raise money and Awareness for the organisation. Dan Quirke said that the charity has managed to raise over €1 M in just 13 months.

Colm Hassett set up Ava Sports Medical; he’s coached teams and was inspired to try to find a solution to prevent the deaths of sportspeople from sudden adult death syndrome. He’s taking part in New Frontiers Phase 2 at the Tom Crean Centre, MTU Kerry.
