Paulette Daly is the partner of drowning victim Dessie Byrne, who died in the sea last August while on a day out with his sister and his son. She believes that Dessie and his sister Muriel Erikson, should not have died on the day in question and that lessons need to be learned, to avert another tragedy. It was later clarified that it was said at the inquest that the number of beachguards was "down to four" that day. Kerry County Council subsquently issued a statement in which it said that four lifeguards were on duty that day as had been scheduled.
