This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is retired jockey Nina Carberry. Nina has had a stellar career as a jockey, and it is very much in her DNA having been born into a famous racing family and then marrying into another! Widely regarded as one of the greatest amateur riders of all time, Nina Carberry enjoyed a terrific near 17-year career in the saddle. She enjoyed a hugely successful association with both the Noel Meade and Enda Bolger stables. Nina became the first female jump jockey in Ireland and Britain to win a Grade 1 race when taking the Champion Bumper at the Punchestown festival in 2006. Nina announced her retirement from the saddle in 2018, in all, she rode 398 winners in Ireland (National Hunt and Flat) and along with 23 in Britain and two in Germany. We will be talking about Nina’s career on the saddle, making history, life after retirement, gambling in horse racing, the sport’s image has had to grapple with accusations of mistreatment and more.
