The arrival of October makes a difference in the countryside. The leaves begin to change colour while outdoor events become less and conditions with more rain can make walking unsuitable so its a case of minding your steps as seen in the photo at Glin. Yours Moss Joe Browne.

Joe,
Some photos of the recent Aurora. For info, the whitening of the Coomakista statue was achieved by shining a torch on it while taking the photo with my I Phone.

I have an added interest in the Aurora Borealis because it was a phenomenon which we reported when it occurred in the course of our weather observations during my time in Met Eireann. We had to report on the movements, times, colours and shapes of the auroras. Features had terms which included "glow, arc, ray, drapery, band, corona," etc. Analysis of the reported data can provide useful information on the solar activity and the earth's magnetic field, whose interaction cause the phenomenon.

I saw my first aurora at Claremorris, Co. Mayo Met. Station in 1957 and others at Valentia Observatory, Cahersiveen, where I served from 1958 to 1988. I think that the recent displays rival or surpass any others I had previously seen.
