Tralee Labour Representative Ben Slimm is calling for greater inclusion, equality, and accountability for the autism community.
His comments come as the Labour Party motion calling for a National Autism Empowerment Strategy is debated in the Dáil today.
Mr Slimm said parents spend so much time fighting with the State for their child that it leaves them exhausted and broken.
He said the National Autism Empowerment Strategy is about accountability for autistic children and adults, and their families.
Mr Slimm also said the disruption to health and education services by COVID-19 has made what was already a poor situation considerably worse for autistic people.
