The sod has been turned on a two-million euro development in South Kerry.
Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys turned the sod at the gteic@Baile an Sceilg development, a digital hub being developed on the Uíbh Ráthach Peninsula.
gteic@Baile an Sceilg will provide workspaces for up to 50 people, as well as providing remote learning and upskilling programmes, and support for small businesses to develop and expand.
Údarás na Gaeltachta says this facility will become a focal point and centre of excellence in the provision of services required by the business community of the Uíbh Ráthach Peninsula and the surrounding region.
This hub will support the work of the Uíbh Ráthach Interagency Taskforce, which was established in 2017.
Minister Heather Humphreys says the digital hub will breathe new life into the community, allowing people to work remotely and generating economic footfall for the area. Her department provided over €2 million in capital finance.
Ireland South Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune is welcoming the investment in Baile an Scelig, adding that ensuring rural locations continue to thrive and develop is part of an EU strategy. She says €4 million has been dedicated to several projects in Kerry, which support hubs in Kenmare, Tralee, Sneem, Killorglin and Killarney and on the Iveragh Peninsula.
