Skellig Michael could reopen to visitors in the coming weeks.
The Office of Public Works, which has responsibility for the island, says discussions regarding the reopening of national monument sites are ongoing.
The OPW says Skellig Michael, due to its location and landscape, requires particular attention in advance of reopening to ensure the safety of staff and visitors.
Preparatory works, which are running several weeks behind schedule due to the pandemic, have commenced on the island in order to make it safe for public access.
These works are under constant review and discussions are ongoing regarding the re-opening of the site.
The OPW says that, at the moment, a decision on a reopening date has not been set, but every effort is being made to have the island ready for visitors in the coming weeks.
Around 16,000 people visit the UNESCO site every year.
