A retired psychiatric nurse says the findings of the review into how young patients were harmed at South Kerry CAMHS underlines the need for a dedicated psychiatric unit for young people in the county.
Jimmy Adams worked as a psychiatric nurse at University Hospital Tralee where he said teenagers as young as 15 were admitted to the adult psychiatric facility.
Mr Adams says despite the care given by staff, it was inappropriate to admit teenagers to an adult unit. He says child and mental health services in Kerry should have a dedicated unit for young people if they need respite or spend some time in hospital.
Jimmy Adams believes that some teenagers who had to share a psychiatric ward with much older adults would be afraid that this was their future.
