Redevelopment works have started on the North Kerry accident blackspot, the Dale Road.
Also known at the Rathscannel road, the route between Abbeydorney and Ballyduff is built on bog and has subsided, and has been the scene of many accidents.
The R556 Ballinclogher to Rathscannel Road Improvement Project involves the realignment of 2.2km of single carriageway, and the restoration improvement works on the adjoining L6081 and L10101 local roads.
Last month Listowel councillors approved planning permission for the redevelopment.
As well as being used by locals, this section of road between Abbeydorney and Ballyduff is used by tourists travelling to and from Ballybunion, however it’s been closed since July last year.
Kerry County Council has started some works including service diversions and replacing culverts, which will continue for a number of weeks before the main excavation works begin.
Meanwhile the council is seeking permission to move earth and rock from the site.
The plans have gone out for public consultation and can be viewed at council offices or online, and submissions or observations can be made up until September 24th.
