The provision of additional parking in Kenmare town remains a priority for Kerry County Council.
At the recent meeting of Kenmare Municipal District, Independent councillors Dan McCarthy and Johnny Healy-Rae both tabled motions asking for an update on parking in the town.
Councillors also enquired about the acquisition or renting of a specific site in the town for parking.
When asked for an update on the provision of extra parking in Kenmare, the council said it has pursued a number of opportunities in recent years, but nothing has proved possible to date.
The council added it continues to pursue potential solutions which could be feasible, locally financed and meet established governance approaches.
It stated that current government funding streams are not prioritising this type of development, so it would have to be financed locally through parking strategies and local parking charges.
Cllr Dan McCarthy enquired about purchasing a site at New Road in Kenmare to provide parking, to which the council replied it is familiar with the site.
Cllr McCarthy called on the council to give a definitive answer one way or the other on whether it's interested in the site.
Cllr Johnny Healy-Rae added the options are few and far between for parking in Kenmare, and said the site could be cleared out and rented to the council on a trial basis.
Padraig Teahan, engineer with the council, replied he can't rule anything out.
He added it's not as simple as clearing it out for a trial, because either development commences on the site, or it doesn't.
