A private school in Kerry has ceased trading with immediate effect.
Brookfield College in Monavalley, Tralee informed students yesterday evening via email that it was closing and not accepting senior cycle students for this academic year.
In an email seen by Radio Kerry, Brookfield College told students that the company has suffered a significant loss as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.
It’s also had very few new enrolments for the upcoming year and, consequently, the business is no longer viable and has been placed into liquidation.
In relation to fees, students were told that they’re now listed as creditors of the company and that the liquidators – JPA Brenson Lawlor – will contact them.
According to Brookfield College’s website, the new term was due to begin on Tuesday, September 2nd.
Sinn Fein councillors Cathal Foley and Deirdre Ferris have described the news as a devastating blow for both staff and students.
Its understood 16 teachers were employed at the college, and the effected students must now find another school place in the next week.
The SF councillors say they have contacted Deputy Pa Daly who has in turn contacted Minister for Education Norma Foley to ensure that students can be accommodated elsewhere as soon as possible.
