Fire fighters, council staff, NPWS staff and volunteers were able to save pockets of an ancient oak forest in Killarney National Park.
The fire is mostly under control now, with small areas still smouldering this afternoon being extinguished by helicopter water drops.
Over 2,000 hectares have been destroyed in the fires, one third the park’s total land mass.
The blaze broke out on Friday night, with firefights working to bring it under control since.
The air corp has dropped around 90,000 litres on the site.
Director of Services with Kerry County Council John Breen says that, for the most part, large areas of heather and gorse were burned.
It’s estimated that one-third of mountainous areas in the park have been burned.
John Breen says, while there is a devastated landscape, there are pockets of emerald throughout.
