Planning permission has been sought for the renovation and extension of an historic gate lodge in Killarney National Park.
The Victorian building is located at the first entrance to the park in Muckross, known locally as the jarvey’s entrance.
The National Parks and Wildlife Service is seeking permission to carry out conservation repairs on the protected structure and build a single-story extension to the rear of the lodge.
The building was occupied by gamekeepers during the tenure of the Herbert estate and has more recently been used as a base for students working on projects, such rhododendron clearing, in the National Park.
Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has warmly welcomed the plans saying the work will ensure the building is protected and preserved for future generations.
