There are plans to conserve Valentia Island's signal tower.
Built in 1815, it was used up until the 1920s by naval authorities as a signal station.
Kerry County Council is now seeking planning permission to redevelop the site.
The signal tower is situated on steep cliffs on Bray Head on Valentia Island, and overlooks the Skellig islands and the Iveragh peninsula.
It was built by the English in 1815 during the Napoleonic wars, and was in use up until the 1920s by naval authorities as a signal station.
Kerry County Council is applying to An Bord Pleanála for planning permission to develop the site.
The proposed works involve stabilising and conserving the existing signal tower building, and removing non-original extensions, roof, and chimney.
The plans also include installing a new concrete spiral staircase, a viewing platform at roof level and wifi antennae, along with a viewing point at ground level with a telescope.
It’s also proposed to rebuild the tower site boundary wall in its original footprint using Valentia Slate.
The plans and Natura Impact Statement can be viewed at Kerry County Council or An Bord Pleanála offices up until October 14th, which is also the closing date for submissions or observations.
