Oyster fishermen fear the upcoming season will be ruined because the crane in Fenit Harbour isn’t available.
It was sent to the UK for repairs over 14 weeks ago, and Sinn Féin Cllr Deirdre Ferris says fishermen now have to pay €250 per lift to a private company.
Cllr Deirdre Ferris says fishermen feel very let down by Kerry County Council, which has responsibility for Fenit Harbour.
The crane was sent to the UK in June and the council said the original timeline for the repair was two weeks.
It needed additional repairs, however, and the delivery of parts delayed this; the council is hopeful the crane will now be returned by early October.
Cllr Ferris says 30 boats need to be lifted into the water, and these fishermen have paid their harbour fees, yet there’s no concession on having to pay a private company €250 for each boat lift.
