Over €325,000 has been allocated to Kerry under the LEADER programme.
LEADER is a rural development programme co-funded by the EU, which operates a locally-led approach to meeting the needs of local communities and businesses.
The LEADER programme aims to support job creation, foster entrepreneurship and encourage rural communities to build on their existing strengths and assets.
In this round of funding, Spa Killarney GAA Club was awarded over €26,000 to develop a walking track around the pitch, while Beaufort GAA Club was allocated over €31,500 to upgrade floodlights.
Kilgarvan Community Playground was awarded €100,000 to develop and enhance the local play area and Pinewood Residents’ Association in Killarney will get over €78,000 to construct a community leisure and recreational area.
North and East Kerry Development (NEWKD) will receive nearly €90,000 as part of a transnational co-operation project with Finland, which is aimed at supporting rurally-based cosmetic companies in both countries whose products utilise natural extracts.
The Minister for Education and Kerry Fianna Fáil TD Norma Foley is welcoming the allocations to Kerry projects and clubs under the LEADER programme.
She says the funding will support locally-led projects, GAA clubs and enterprises, enriching local communities by developing outdoor amenities and creating jobs in rural areas.
Independent deputy Danny Healy-Rae has also welcomed the funding.
