The Office of Public Works says plans are progressing for the multi-million euro Kenmare Flood Relief Scheme.

Businesses and homes in the town were flooded as a result of heavy rainfall on Wednesday night and yesterday morning.

The OPW says its €5.43 million plan is progressing and, in October, it’s intended that the process to procure consultants will get underway.

John Martin of the OPW says it'll take between 12 and 18 months to complete the design and development of the scheme which will then require planning permission.

Mr Martin says in the meantime, to alleviate the worst problems causing by flooding, there is also funding under the OPW’s Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme.

The OPW has identified Kenmare as a priority area for flood relief.

Sneem doesn’t have that status but the state body has cited it as an area for funding under its Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme.

John Martin says the OPW has identified what needs to be done to address flooding on the N70 road at Sneem.
