Figures released show there were more than 1,000 (1,053) one-off houses built in Kerry between 2016 and 2020.
The data from the Central Statistics Office which was given to the Sunday Independent show that 22,500 single dwellings were built nationally over that five year period, while permission was granted for nearly 26,000 during the same time.
Cork county had the highest number of completions during this period - with more than 2,600 (2,628) single dwelling completions.
Nationally, Kerry had the seventh highest number of completions for one-off houses with 1,053 built between 2016 and 2020.
Yesterday's Sunday Independent published the figures in the wake of tensions between the Greens and its coalition partners over the need for one-off housing.
Junior planning minister Peter Burke of Fine Gael supports people's right to build one-off houses in rural areas while junior housing minister Malcolm Noonan of the Greens has been very critical of allowing single dwellings in the countryside.
