The Minister for the Marine says he will be working with the EU to secure a new control plan around weighing fish.
The European Commission recently removed a special derogation allowing fish to be weighed at factories as authorities couldn’t guarantee that fraud would be detected.
The commission said Ireland can’t be trusted to police its fishing quotas and now all catches must be weighed at the point of landing.
It comes as Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue is negotiating with the EU around additional supports for the Irish fishing sector as a result of Brexit.
