A man from the Black Valley who spent four months in intensive care after contracting COVID-19 has thanked staff at University Hospital Kerry.
A major fundraising cycle during the summer raised over €27,000 for the hospital's ICU department.
Gene Tagney contracted coronavirus in March and was placed in an induced coma and on a ventilator to help him breathe at University Hospital Kerry for three months.
The popular outdoor enthusiast in his mid-fifties was released from the hospital during the summer is still in need of a lot of rehabilitation and ongoing treatment.
In July, Denis Geaney and his team organised a charity cycle around the Ring of Kerry to raise funds for the ICU at UHK.
€27,465 was raised through the event and Gene returned to UHK this week for the cheque presentation, along with a framed picture for the ICU ward.
Gene and his family said they were so grateful to the medical team and staff in UHK, to Denis Geaney for organising the fundraiser and to the thousands of people who sent messages of support in recent months and lit candles on Easter Monday night.
