A man has received a five-month prison sentence after spitting at three gardaí in Killarney.
Jamie Power, with an address of Muckross Road, Killarney but who's originally from Tralee, pleaded guilty to assault at Tralee District Court.
Jamie Power, who's in his twenties, was arrested on a public order matter on Monday night, July 27th, and brought to Killarney Garda Station.
While in custody, he spat at three gardaí.
Mr Power was charged with assault under section two of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997.
He appeared before Tralee District Court yesterday where he pleaded guilty to assault.
Judge David Waters sentenced Mr Power to five months in prison.
Mr Power's solicitor Pádraig O'Connell put forward an abject apology on behalf of his client and told the court that Mr Power had been on prescribed medication and had consumed alcohol. Mr O'Connell said Mr Power was taking his punishment on the chin.
Mr O'Connell said Jamie Power spat at the gardaí while under arrest in the cell area of the station and was in a highly emotional state. Mr O'Connell stated that the early plea was indicative of his insight into his wrongdoing.
Supt Flor Murphy of the Killarney Garda Division stated that this behaviour is disgusting and particularly nasty during the current pandemic. He said it also showed what gardaí have to deal with on a regular basis.
