A Lebanese man who was convicted of the murder of two Irish peacekeepers and the attempted murder of a Kerryman 40 years ago has had his appeal thrown out.
76-year-old Mahmoud Bazzi was found guilty of murdering Private Thomas Barrett and Private Derek Smallhorne on the 18th April, 1980 in Lebanon.
He also attempted to murder Private John O’Mahony from Scartaglin.
Mahmoud Bazzi kidnapped, tortured and killed Privates Smallhorne and Barrett and shot John O’Mahony, in revenge for the death of his brother in a firefight.
He committed the murders while a member of the Israeli-sponsored South Lebanon Army (SLA) militia.
Scartaglin’s John O'Mahony, who survived the ambush, gave evidence against Mr Bazzi during the trial.
Mr Bazzi was sentenced to life in prison last December but, due to his age, the sentence was reduced to 15 years.
RTÉ is reporting his appeal has been dismissed, with the court saying there were no grounds for the 76-year-old to appeal the conviction and sentence.
