A Killarney councillor has been told that modular homes are not suitable for use as emergency accommodation in the district.

Independent councillor Maura Healy Rae proposed a motion to Killarney Municipal District that the council consider using modular housing to provide accommodation for people presenting as homeless in the district.

Councillor Maura Healy Rae said it's inappropriate Tralee is the only option for homeless people in and from Killarney, with school-going children particularly badly affected.

Council official Ger O’Brien said modular homes are not a temporary solution, but rather a modern construction method which will play a role expanding the council's social housing portfolio.

He said it would not be practical to ask a homeless family to leave a home after they had moved in, which would be unfair to others already on the housing list.

Council management said it is actively exploring temporary options with private providers because of a shortage of suitable facilities in Killarney Municipal District.

Cllr Healy-Rae said the temporary use of modular homes would be better than moving people out of their community.
