Kerry TD Brendan Griffin has called on three government departments to work together to clear the backlog of roads on the Local Improvement Scheme list.
Almost €700,000 has been allocated to improve non-public roads in Kerry this year but there’s almost 800 roads on the list.
Many of the roads provide access to lakes, rivers and mountains as well to homes and farms.
Speaking in the Dáil, the deputy Government Chief Whip said these roads have been ignored by local authorities for years and many are in an appalling state.
He called on the Departments of Transport, Local Government and Rural and Community Affairs to look at redirecting capital funding that can’t be spent now because of COVID to LIS.
Deputy Griffin said some roads are so bad emergency services would struggle to use them.
