Kerry TD Brendan Griffin has called for additional financial supports and incentives for first time buyers to buy and modernise derelict buildings.
Deputy Griffin said the Government’s Help to Buy scheme should be expanded to include uninhabitable properties.
Speaking during housing questions in the Dáil, Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin said any property that has been vacant for over two years should be eligible for the scheme for first time buyers to get more housing stock back in the market quickly.
Deputy Griffin is also proposing the introduction of a VAT refund scheme for first time buyers or self-builders on the first €200,000 of the cost of works on a home as well as increasing the extension dimensions permitted without planning permission on existing structures from 400 square feet to 800 square feet.
Deputy Griffin also proposes a Capital Gains Tax exemption for two years for sellers who sell to first time buyers, to encourage derelict properties to be out up for sale.
He is also suggesting a refund scheme for water and electricity re-connection fees in respect of such properties.
The deputy Government Chief Whip says rejuvenating existing derelict housing would help solve the housing crisis.
