A Kerry senator wants to open a debate on using nuclear energy.
Fianna Fáil senator Ned O’Sullivan has asked the Seanad to arrange for a debate on the issue in the Autumn session.
He says the production of nuclear energy is prohibited in Ireland, yet – due to our connectivity with the UK – the country is importing energy from mixed sources, including nuclear.
Senator O’Sullivan believes a number of factors raise the possibility of using nuclear power, such as changing public opinion on the energy source, the opposition to LNG and the proliferation of wind turbines.
He says a lot has changed over the decades.
