Kerry produces the most renewable energy in the Republic of Ireland.
This is according to Wind Energy Ireland, the representative body for the Irish wind industry, which promotes wind energy as an economical and environmentally friendly part of the country’s low-carbon energy future.
It has released a report on the impact of wind energy in Kerry.
Wind Energy Ireland’s report says €5 million is paid by wind farms in rates to Kerry County Council every year, which is 10 percent of the county’s entire commercial rates budget.
70 people are employed in Enercon’s Tralee headquarters, while hundreds of jobs are supported in the county through the development of wind energy.
Community groups in Kerry received more than €300,000 in funding from wind farms in 2019.
Wind Energy Ireland says over the next 10 years Ireland will connect a new generation of offshore wind farms, providing clean energy to power homes, farms and businesses.
It says Kerry is situated to lead the way and gain economically from this, not just in the Shannon estuary, but at the port in Fenit.
