The mental health centre at University Hospital Kerry has achieved 88% compliance in a recent Mental Health Commission (MHC) inspection report.
The Sliabh Mis Mental Health Admission Unit increased its compliance by 30% in this inspection, when compared to an inspection of the unit in 2019.
The Sliabh Mis Mental Health Admission Unit is registered to accommodate 34 residents.
This most recent report shows the centre was non-compliant in four areas; that's compared to 15 areas of non-compliance noted in the 2019 inspection
This Mental Health Commission inspection report notes high risks, identified in 2019, had been addressed by the Kerry unit in 2020.
There were four conditions attached to the registration of the centre at the time of inspection relating to maintenance of records, risk management, individual care planning, and staffing; the centre was not in breach of any of its conditions.
However, it was non-compliant with the regulation in relation to staffing; the inspection found the numbers and skill mix of staffing were not sufficient to meet residents' needs.
A high level of non-compliance was also noted with regards the admission of children; it noted age-appropriate facilities and a programme of activities were not provided for child admissions.
The inspection also found children didn't have access to age-appropriate advocacy services, while one child didn't have their rights explained and information about the ward provided in a way they could understand.
The Kerry Mental Health Unit was also non-complaint with the use of CCTV as CCTV monitors in the Reask and Valentia Units were not viewed solely by the health professionals responsible for the residents.
The final area of non-compliance related to admission, transfer and discharge as a comprehensive discharge summary was not issued to relevant personnel within 14 days.
The Sliabh Mis Mental Health Admission Unit was compliant in all other areas.
