The Kerry branch of the Irish Farmers’ Association has supported the introduction of stricter rules for young drivers operating heavy machinery.
The European Commission is considering restricting the weight and speed of vehicles driven by younger operators.
As it stands, 16 year-olds can drive farm machinery on a provisional licence.
Kenny Jones, the Chairman of the Kerry IFA, argued that contractors are slow to hire younger operators who don’t have ample experience.
However, he would support a two-tier system which would see younger drivers operating lighter machinery.
