The Chair of the Kerry branch of the Irish Farmers' Association says any new eco-schemes as part of the next Common Agricultural Policy will have to be flexible.
Discussions are continuing in Brussels among EU leaders on the new CAP which will shape the future of farming in the bloc; a deal is expected this week but divisions remain.
Among the issues is the funding of eco-schemes focused on environment, climate and animal welfare.
The schemes will be voluntary but farmers who don't take part will lose a portion of their direct payment.
