A Kerry county councillor claims people are disposing of domestic waste in the street bins in Tralee town.
Mayor of Tralee, Labour councillor Terry O’Brien says the issue was brought to his attention by someone who was carrying out works in the town.
He raised the issue at the recent Tralee Municipal District meeting.
Cllr Terry O’Brien says people were seen dumping their domestic waste into the street bins, which are provided by the council, early in the morning.
He is calling on Kerry County Council to examine the possibility of supplying more bins for the town centre and at nearby amenities.
However, he says they should be placed close to a CCTV system to try and eliminate people dumping their domestic waste there.
The council says the Tralee MD has increased its schedule for emptying many bins that are located on the periphery of the town, which it says has proven to be effective in reducing the level of overfill of bins and littering along these amenities.
It says this measure will be reviewed however, the council adds that it’s not currently its intention to provide additional bins.
The council says the Tralee MD assigns significant resources to dealing with litter and waste in the town centre.
It adds businesses also have a role to play, particularly in the provision of private bins where they sell food.
