Derelict dwellings in the county should be acquired through compulsory purchase orders.
That's according to Fianna Fáil councillor Michael O'Shea, who says neighbouring local authorities use the framework to return many disused properties to the housing market.
Councillor O'Shea asked Kerry County Council to use compulsory purchase orders to acquire derelict buildings, dwellings and disused buildings and return them to habitation.
The council says its derelict sites unit takes a very proactive approach in dealing with these properties and resolve many cases before the need to consider a CPO.
It acknowledged a number of long-running cases need to be considered for CPO but the implications of this also need to be taken into account.
The council says CPO is a facility which will need to have a limited and focused impact.
In advance of the acquisition of derelict sites, the council says it must be cognisant of issues, such as the cost of acquisition and refurbishment, future use of the buildings, contribution to site amalgamation and overall impact on the vitality of the area.
Kerry County Council adds it's very cognisant of the impact that derelict properties have on the appearance of towns and villages.
