A Kerry county councillor has questioned the timing of a move by the council to crack down on unregistered short-term letting.

The Irish Times reports that a new specialised unit has been set up in Kerry County Council to target premises in Killarney that are being used for short-term lets and B&Bs, but do not have planning permission to do so, or aren't registered.

According to reports, 45 warning letters have been issued in the town by the council under the provisions of Section 152 of the Planning and Development Act 2000-2020 in respect of the use of properties for short-term letting purposes.

Independent councillor, and Killarney hotelier Niall 'Botty' O'Callaghan, says the area needs to be regulated, as unregistered short-term lets create an unfair playing field in the industry.

However, Cllr O'Callaghan has questioned the timing of the move by the council.
