The Kerry campus of the MTU has experienced increases of over 40% in potential demand for some courses.
This includes increased mentions in the CAO for courses across higher certificate, ordinary and higher degree level in the Tralee campuses.
Each applicant may submit up to ten course choices in order of preference.
The CAO considers each of these choices as “mentions” for the third-level institution, regardless of the number of choices made and the order.
More than 79,000 applications have been made for third level courses nationwide.
The MTU says mentions for level eight courses at the Tralee campuses have increased by 19%, with mentions for levels six and seven increasing by 42%.
These are well above the national average of around 11% for all three levels.
The university says increases were most apparent in engineering, science, health and computing-related subjects.
The MTU says, while it has seen increased interest in advanced entry programmes from a number of EU countries, it’s too early to say if this is due to the UK’s departure from the European Union.
The MTU adds that to have such a large increase in CAO mentions in its first year shows it offers a great opportunity to the South-West region in growing industry and creating an educated and skilled workforce.
