Tom Crean from Annascaul is among a select group of Irish explorers who will be commemorated in a new issue of stamps by An Post next month.
The stamps salute the major contribution to Antarctic exploration made by Tom Crean and other Irish explorers in the early 20th century.
Tom Crean was a member of three major expeditions to Antarctica and was awarded the Albert Medal for saving the life of a fellow explorer.
His biographer Michael Smith says the Irish contribution to Antarctic discovery has been underestimated.
Mr Smith says he’s delighted they are getting official recognition.
