Kerry County Council says the banning of bathing on three beaches is not related to sewage run-off but to the recent high levels of rainfall.
Elevated levels of E.coli were detected at Fenit beach and diving boards, Inny Beach, Waterville and Waterville town beach following scheduled water sampling.
The heavy rain on Sunday and Monday resulted in run-off from lands into streams and rivers leading to an increase in the amount of suspended materials being washed into the sea.
Warning notices were erected by the council last weekend ahead of the forecasted rainfall.
The council is awaiting the results of further water samples to assess the situation ahead of this weekend.
