A Kerry MEP has been appointed to the position of standing rapporteur for the UK in the European Parliament's trade committee.
Ireland South MEP Sean Kelly will take up the role and will chair the monitoring group for trade with the UK.
The Fine Gael MEP, who is from Kilcummin, will play a prominent role in the Parliament's broader UK contact group, which includes representatives from each committee.
MEP Sean Kelly says he is looking forward to working with colleagues to facilitate EU-UK relations.
He says considering the implications of Brexit on Ireland, as well as the current tensions surrounding the Northern Ireland Protocol, it's important to have an influential Irish voice in the European Parliament in the discussions.
