An investigation is underway after residents of 15 homes in Tralee have complained of rat infestations.
The estates affected are in the greater Mitchel's area of the town, as well as Hawley Park, O'Connor's Terrace and Ballymullen.
Cllr Sam Locke, who raised the issue at the Tralee Municipal District meeting, says the problem arose when digging began to construct a new road for the new Gaelcholaiste.
A number of old ditches and walls were dug up in the course of the work, and rats' nests were disturbed.
The HSE has been informed and Kerry County Council is investigating the issue.
Cllr Locke warned people living in these areas not to leave rubbish or food in their gardens or back yards.
