An initiative has been launched that will see Killarney become the first town in Ireland to be single-use coffee cup free.
The Killarney Coffee Cup Project will result in the reduction of over one million disposable coffee cups sold in the town annually, and 18.5 tonnes of waste.
The decision to move to a reusable takeaway system has been agreed by 25 local independent coffee shops and 21 hotels.
The measure aims promote the use of customers’ own reusable cups, but for those that don’t have one, participating shops have introduced a collective deposit system by partnering with 2GoCup, a deposit and return solutions company.
This will allow customers buy a reusable cup for a €2 deposit, which is refundable when returned to any participating location in Killarney or nationwide.
