More than half of septic tanks checked in Kerry last year failed an inspection.
The Environmental Protection Agency’s annual report for 2019 shows there are nearly 500,000 wastewater treatment systems in Ireland, with septic tanks being the most prevalent.
Nationally, over half of septic tanks inspected failed to meet the required standard last year.
The EPA report shows 52 septic tanks were examined in Kerry in 2019.
Of these, 65% - or 34 tanks – failed the inspection.
Over the past seven years, over 200 tanks in the county failed an inspection; however, the EPA says 82% of these have since been fixed.
This rate is well above average when compared with national figures.
