Five Kerry schools have been allocated funding to improve walking and cycling infrastructure.
They're among 170 primary and post-primary schools across the country to have been included in the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Programme, which will receive €15 million altogether to improve walking and cycling infrastructure.
In Kerry, three primary schools and two secondary schools, all in Tralee, were selected for the first round of funding.
Moyderwell Mercy Primary School, Sacred Heart Primary School, and Scoil Mhuire na mBriathre,(CBS Primary) are the primary schools to have been allocated funding.
The Kerry secondary schools included are Mercy Secondary School Mounthawk, and Presentation Secondary School Tralee.
Education Minister and Kerry Fianna Fáil TD Norma Foley has welcomed the funding and says she looks forward to seeing the imaginative and fun ways the communities reinvent the active pathways to schools.
Kerry Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin also welcomed the funding, adding the health benefits of walking and cycling to school can't be understated.
Green Party representative for Tralee, Anluan Dunne, says this initiative will tackle the problem of safety for children cycling and walking to school, and alleviate traffic congestion at schools.
