The final residents have been moved out of the Skellig Star direct provision centre.
It’s been less than six months since the first asylum seekers were moved to Cahersiveen from locations in Dublin, during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
From when the first asylum seekers were transported to the Skellig Star Accommodation Centre in March, there were calls to move them elsewhere, due to concerns over space, facilities and adherence to COVID-19 guidelines.
An outbreak of the coronavirus was first confirmed in mid-April, with more residents testing positive later that month.
Locals and residents staged a number of protests outside the centre during May and June, before a number of residents went on hunger strike towards the end of July.
During the third day of that hunger strike, the Minister for Justice and Equality, Helen McEntee, said the department will close the centre.
Solidarity with Skellig Star Hotel Residents tweeted its thanks to Minister McEntee for upholding her speech in the Dáil.
The Department of Justice has confirmed the last of the residents departed the Skellig Star Accommodation Centre yesterday.
