Kerry County Council will write to the RSA requesting a campaign to advise road users of the dangers of sun glare.
It follows motions at the full meeting of Kerry County Council.
Speaking on his motion, Fine Gael councillor for the Castlesiland-Corca Dhuibhne Municipal District, Seamus Cosaí-Fitzgerald said sun glare is a serious danger.
He claims the Road Safety Authority refer to sun glare as dangerous driving, whereas the reality is completely different.
Cllr Fitzgerald says he has experienced the effects of sun glare while driving and was forced to stop his car as a result.
Adding the dangers should be highlighted by the RSA in the same way as the dangers of drink/driving, speeding and not wearing a seat belt.
The motion was supported by Fine Gael councillor, Mike Kennelly, who said it’s also a serious risk for cyclists and pedestrians during high sunshine.
Fianna Fáil councillor, Breandán Fitzgerald, who moved a similar motion, says it’s a serious issue; with many motorists unsure of how to respond when affected by sun glare.
His motion to write to the RSA was seconded by Fianna Fáil, councillor Johnnie Wall.
