The Education Minister says 7,000 students who sat the Leaving Cert last year and deferred going to college have already received third level offers.
Concerns have been raised about the stronger grades achieved by this year's Leaving Cert students through the calculated grade system and the impact this may have on those who deferred.
Kerry Fianna Fáil Cllr Fionnán Fitzgerald, who is a secondary school teacher, is calling for those students who won't have the benefit of a rise in points to have their situation dealt with fairly.
Education Minister Norma Foley says Third Level Minister Simon Harris is very aware of the issue of students and extra third level places have been made available.
Minister Foley says the number of students involved is not as high as being reported and we won't know what the situation will be until the CAO process begins on Friday.
