The rate of COVID-19 in Killarney has more than doubled over the past week.
This is according to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre, which has calculated the number of cases and the 14-day incidence rate of COVID-19 in all local electoral areas in the Republic.
During the fortnight up to July 5th, three electoral areas in Kerry recorded fewer than five new cases: they were Corca Dhuibhne, Tralee and Castleisland.
The Listowel LEA, which includes most of North Kerry, had six cases over the fortnight, giving a rate of 21 per population.
Kenmare LEA, stretching from Killorglin to Kilgarvan and including the Iveragh Peninsula, recorded 19 cases, giving it a rate of 76.
Killarney LEA had the highest rate of COVID-19 in the county, with 49 cases over the fortnight, giving an incidence rate of 166.
A week ago, Killarney had recorded 20 cases, less than half this week’s figure.
Over the two-week period up to July 5th, there were 74 new cases in Kerry, up from 47 this day last week.
Even though the rate is increasing, Kerry still has one of the lowest incidence rates in the country, with a rate of 62 per 100,000 population.
