A South Kerry councillor has labelled government regulations for landowners in Special Areas of Conservation, as another nail in the coffin of farming.

Norma Moriarty was reacting to the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage informing landowners of a list of 38 activities requiring consent.

It’s part of the statutory designation of the Killarney National Park, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks and Caragh River catchment as a special area of conservation – which has now been complete.

Landowners in the over 76,000 hectares area - which includes Killarney, Glencar, and Waterville - will require Ministerial consent to undertake certain actions.

Cllr Moriarty says these measures are a needless layer of bureaucracy.
