It's hoped works will begin on the Gort Bridge in Kilgarvan in May or June of this year.
An update on the construction of a new bridge was given at the recent Kenmare Municipal District meeting, following a motion by Independent councillor Johnny Healy-Rae.
Cllr Healy-Rae said that the bridge is over a glorified stream, and called the timeframe of the works highly unfair.
Engineer with Kerry County Council Padraig Teahan, acknowledged the frustration of locals and councillors about the length of time the project is taking.
He said the council is bound by statutory processes as a new structure is required, and it's hard to make these move any quicker.
Mr Teahan says the council is trying to get the project out to tender as soon as possible, and hopes for construction to begin in May or June.
