Kerry County Council says it can't currently justify the use of an emergency footbridge in Castleisland.
At a recent council meeting, Cllr Charlie Farrelly said the situation at Barrack Street in the town is an accident waiting to happen.
He called for the council's emergency footbridge worth €80,000, currently not in use, to be moved to Castleisland.
The reply to Cllr Farrelly's motion said the footbridge is part of the council's contingency planning in the event of an emergency, and that it was never intended, nor is it appropriate for use as a permanent structure.
The independent councillor said he was not happy with the answer, as the situation in Castleisland is an emergency.
He said the Castleisland Municipal District would even sponsor transportation of the bridge if it can be brought in.
He asked that the council don't let €80,000 of taxpayers' money go down the drain, as it has done the last four years by letting the bridge sit idle.
Charlie O'Sullivan, Director of Roads, Transportation and Marine with the council, said he cannot classify the situation in Castleisland as an emergency and that the bridge is not suitable for Barrack Street.
He added he does not see any significant risks with using the existing bridge, as traffic is moving so slowly over it.
Cllr Farrelly again disagreed, adding it's frightening what's going on there, as heavy vehicles are using the current bridge.
